Slow PC - Keeping your PC running Smoothly
Got a slow PC. I don’t know about you, be does your PC seem to slow over time? I’ve have spent lots of time and money installing new hardware such as more memory and faster hard drives trying to improve my slow PC’s performance, but never seem to get the boost you were expecting or looking for.
Here is a list of essential bits of FREE (ish) software I would recommend you use to keep your slowing PC running smoothly, responsive and ‘crap’ free.
1 - Antivirus - For this I have chosen Avast. This antivirus software runs in the background but also has an E-mail, p2p and instant messages checker. It also uses very little system recourses again giving you slow pc a new lease of life.
2 - Antispyware - Spybot Search and Destroy. I think the most powerful feature of this software in the ability it immunize you PC system to stop any threats before they attack. Run it once a week updating every time before every scan, this should keep the trojans and worms that can slow your PC down at bay.
3 - Antispyware - Lavasoft’s Adaware. Again, a great piece of software that scans for malicious software that can slow your PC. Update and scan every week. If you have multiple users on a PC, you will need to run the software on all accounts on that PC.
4 - Defragmenter - For this task I have chosen Diskeeper. Fragmented hard drives can really slow a pc down. With this great bit of software you can be set and forgotten about weekly defrags as it auto defrags your hard drive as and when it needs to. It not free (but is if you know where to look) but worth every penny and a well maintained hard disk can give you a great speed boost.
Slow PC’s can also be caused by old drivers, so I would also recommend updating any drives that are released for any of your hardware as they appear.
