Color Secrets

Working with the same two or three colors for a long time can certainly clog the creativity as well. For the last 6 or so years, my day jobs have me dealing with versions of black blue and gold. Trust me it does get stale. Luckily I’ve had the pleasure of working on several freelance web design and side projects to keep my creative chunk of the brain in tact. Much of this involves modifying or creating a new color scheme. Just as layout and content, color is an integral part of a web sites existence. A drab color scheme can hinder usability, accessibility, appeal and ultimately kill your site. Now, the purpose of this post is not to scare people away from web development especially if they do not feel they have the eye for color. I happened to enjoy color, color theory and study it when I can. There is a science of what works and what doesn’t but ultimately it boils down to what you and others think looks good. I have had several people come up to me and ask for a quick color scheme. Most of these people tend to be more of the developer/coder types. They seem to feel their eye for color and design is not always up to par. I’m certainly not going to argue with them (save that for another day) but for everyone who feels weak in the color department, check out these two really cool web sites that help people who need a little jolt to get them thinking about successful color use.
