  • Cingular Introduces Palm Treo 750

    Just in time for the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Cingular and Palm have jointly released the Treo 750, a high-end smartphone that can fairly be called a roving office.

    The new 750 improves on prior Treo models from Sprint and Verizon with a sleeker design, a soft-touch finish, an internal antenna, and contoured grips. And, like its kinsmen, it sports Windows Mobile 5.0, replete with miniature versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, along with Outlook.

    The 750 also includes Microsoft’s Direct Push technology, so users can receive Exchange-based e-mail without having to open their e-mail software and request it, just as BlackBerry users have their e-mail sent to them automatically.


    Making Connections

    Palm has added a host of enhancements to the 750, including fast-forward, rewind, and delete buttons for voicemail. If you get a call when you’re already on a call, you can choose the “ignore with text” feature that routes the incoming call to voicemail, then sends the caller a text message saying you’re busy.

    What the 750 lacks, oddly enough, is built-in Wi-Fi, a standard on many of today’s smartphones. But it’s also billed as the first cell phone to offer GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, and, later in 2007, HSDPA high-speed access through a free firmware upgrade.

    GSM carries voice, while GPRS and EDGE are mobile-data options that offer dial-up and ISDN speeds, respectively. UMTS offers speeds that range from 200 to 400 Kbps, but also lets users send and receive data while talking. HSDPA is one of the fastest mobile-data options available with average speeds in the range of 400 to 700 Kbps.

    If you’re on the road five days a week, you can trick out the 750 with Cingular’s optional TeleNav GPS system, too. And of course the phone also comes with the ability to surf the Web and…
