Hollerin’
By Lockergnome | February 21, 2007
Kids do it. Hogs do it. Heck, my mom even used to do it when it was time for dinner, or for me to clean up my room. What is the “it” I’m referring to? That is the subject of today’s Warped site. Cover your ears before entering.
The name of the site is Hollerin’. Hollerin’ is what you did when your brother was picking on you, or what he did when you were picking on him. Hollerin’ is considered by some to be the earliest form of communication between humans. It is a traditional form of communication used in rural areas before the days of telecommunications to convey long-distance messages.
Hollerin’ has been honed to a fine art form. How many different types are there? Well, according to the site, there is the distress holler (help, I’ve fallen down and can’t get up), the communicative holler (usually to your neighbor 3 blocks away), and the expressive holler (such as “Holy Jumpin’ Up and Down Martha”). This site has examples of all of these types, such as the rendition of “Amazing Grace.”
If you’re still wondering what this is all about, you can order the CD and REALLY listen to them. All proceeds are donated to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Metal Lab, which is gracious enough to host this site. The Warp-o-Meter, did, and just hasn’t been the same since. That must be why The Warp-o-Meter gives this site 8.5.
