Toshiba kicks out its own 4GB microSDHC card

    Saturday, June 30th, 2007

    Filed under:

Oh, Toshiba. Usually we wouldn’t react too kindly to jumping in the game nearly half a year late, but considering just how rare these 4GB microSDHC cards still seem to be, we’ll give you a pass on this one. Sure enough, Tosh is finally ready to unleash its wee 4GB microSDHC card on the world, and besides guaranteeing sustained write rates of up to 4Mbps, it also promises write speeds of nearly 6Mbps. No word on pricing details as of now, but considering that these should be hitting (a few) shelves come next month, you won’t be waiting too much longer in tense anticipation.

Resolute Wal-Mart shopper attempts to self-checkout $5 plasma

    Saturday, June 30th, 2007

    Filed under:

While we’ve certainly seen more dramatic heists before, this particular run-in with the law melds cleverness and ignorance in perfect harmony. After conjuring up grandiose thoughts of subversion, a less-than-reasonable fellow managed to snag a 42-inch Sanyo plasma, replace the $984 pricetag with a slightly less burdensome $4.88 sticker, and carry it to the front where he utilized a self-checkout register to all but steal a brand new PDP. Presumably grinning from ear to ear just basking in the glory of his brilliance, we imagine the mood went south quite quickly after store officers approached the man and demanded a receipt. Of course, he attempted to sweet talk his way out of the predicament, but the end result landed him in handcuffs at the Ouachita Correctional Center. Can’t blame a guy for tryin’, eh?

    Meizu’s 16GB MiniOne M8: $989 in 2008

    Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Official word from China is that the Meizu MiniOne (AKA, M8, the original iPhone killer) is expected to go up for sale in early 2008. While the final specs and price have still not been confirmed, that hasn’t stopped importers from listing the 16GB version of the 3G MiniOne for $988.50 and a claimed “in stock” date of December 7th — a date which may live in infamy (again) if true.

iPhone stress test: how did it do?

    Saturday, June 30th, 2007

The Internets are a cruel place when it comes to first generation uber-hyped gear. So goes the iPhone stress test conducted by PC World. Now, how do you think that 3.5-inch sheet of glass stacked onto a slim 11.6-mm chassis held up? Well, in tests which found the iPhone in a 30 to 40 rep shake ‘n bake with a bag full of key chains; on the business end of a deliberate cold-steel scratch attempt on the display; and dropped to concrete at heights (note plural) of up to about 6-feet, it came away with just a few scuffs along the metal edge. Right, no damage to the display. Be sure to check all the behind-split-finger gore in their video.

Netgear gets 802.11n draft 2.0 certified with RangeMax NEXT routers

    Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Surely bitter after being one-upped by D-Link by a matter of hours, Netgear is still tooting its own horn over being the second to receive the Wi-Fi Alliance’s 802.11n draft 2.0 certification. The firm’s first two devices to include the newfangled seal are the RangeMax NEXT Wireless-N Router Gigabit Edition (WNR854T) and the RangeMax NEXT Wireless-N Router (WNR834B; seen after the break), both of which are fully backwards compatible with the slower flavors of 802.11. Thankfully, citizens who currently own a RangeMax NEXT 802.11n Draft 1.0 product can upgrade their device free of charge via a firmware download, and Netgear even proclaims that the rest of its Wireless-N products are “being tested” and should be up to snuff soon.

Scientists perform quantum computer simulation on vanilla PC

    Friday, June 29th, 2007

    Filed under:

We’ve seen what (little) a quantum computer can do, but a pair of curious scientists flipped the equation around and sent a humdrum PC to do a supercomputer’s work. Professor Peter Drummond and Dr. Piotr Deuar were able to “successfully simulate a collision of two laser beams from an atom laser using an everyday desktop computer,” which would typically only be attempted on a substantially more powerful machine. Notably, the achievement wasn’t entirely without flaw, as the purported randomness in the testing eventually “swamped everything” and forced the simulation to be halted in order to gather any useful data whatsoever. Unfortunately, we’re all left to wonder exactly what kind of machine was used to chew through such grueling calculations (Compubeaver, perhaps?), but feel free to throw out your suggestions below.

    DIY multitouch table explained step-by-step

    Friday, June 29th, 2007

Those tempted by the idea of building their own multitouch table but put off by the high degree of difficultly may want to check out the latest DIY walkthrough by “turkey tek” at the ever-useful Instructables website, which breaks things down step-by-step. Like similar setups, this one relies on a projector for the main component, but thoughtfully employs a swivel ceiling mount so you don’t have to sacrifice your home theater for the cause. As for the rest of the project, while it’s certainly well-explained and helpfully-illustrated, it’s still quite an ambitious homebrew endeavor, so be sure you know what you’re getting into before you start busting apart webcams.
