BMW warms up to Apple’s iPhone
Friday, June 29th, 2007Filed under: Cellphones, Portable Audio, Transportation
Nearly three years ago to the day, BMW announced that you could “iPod your BMW.” Today, that same luxury is being passed onto Apple’s latest handheld device. According to an admittedly brief introduction page at BMW, the automaker has proclaimed that it is indeed the first to ensure that iPhone owners can look forward to seamless integration of music playback and handsfree Bluetooth calling “across its model line.” Beginning today, BMW whips equipped with BMW Assist with Bluetooth can enjoy handsfree calling in their ride, and those with the iPod / USB interface can control the iPod functions of the iPhone via built-in vehicle controls and view the track / album information on your radio (or navigation system, we presume). BMW notes that “further details” will be available soon, and with any luck, a few more automakers will follow suit in the near future.
[Thanks, Alex]

Friday, June 29th, 2007Filed under: Cellphones, Features, Interviews
We caught up with the one and only Steve Wozniak waiting in line to take an iPhone (or six) home. He even gave a bunch of people in line shirts and signed line badges. Aw, how nice! (Higher res versions coming soon.)

Happiness is… owning the iPhone
Friday, June 29th, 2007Filed under: Cellphones, Portable Audio, Portable Video

Look at that. We’re looking at some of the happiest consumers on the planet: the first iPhone owners. Having waited literally years for it to churn through the rumor mill, each of these mortal peers now has their very own cherub of Cuppertino design. Each swaddled in a new protective dress and ready to take home to be cradled by a pristine white dock. Enjoy it while you can proud parents; soon they’ll be all grown up and running off to Europe.
Nick from The Boy Genius Report — first at the Apple Store, International Plaza, Tampa after the break. Unknown guy up top… but you wish you were him.

South Korea gets first dibs on RAZR 2
Friday, June 29th, 2007Filed under: Cellphones
While most of us have to wait until next month (or later for CDMA-dependent folks) to get our hands on Motorola’s shiny new RAZR 2 (otherwise known as the other big phone coming out this summer), those in South Korea can now lay claim to a few early bragging rights, as Moto’s decided to give them first dibs on it. According to Motorola Korea, the somewhat unusual move is being done “in recognition of tech-savvy and fashion-aware Korean consumers.” The perks end there, however, as they’ll still have to cough up a hefty 580,000 Korean won (or $630) to call the phone their own, although that price is before the usual discounts and subsidies.

Ringtone images hidden in iTunes 7.3
Friday, June 29th, 2007
Oh yes they are folks, ringtone icons snatched straight from the newly launched iTunes 7.3 resource folder. First noticed by reader Michael (and confirmed by us) in the comments — nice work, bro. So what could the little guys be doing there, after all, there isn’t a Ringtones tab in any of the iPhone how-to guides unlike the slide presented at WWDC? Don’t know, but let’s hope they’ll sit next little MP3/AAC ringtones we create ourselves for free and not just the ones we download from the iTunes store for a fee, eh?

Philadelphia mayor caught camping for an iPhone
Friday, June 29th, 2007Filed under: Cellphones
If we ran the world Philadelphia, it’s highly unlikely that we’d camp out in the dismal rain for an iPhone like all those “normal citizens,” but we’ve got to give props to John F. Street for roughin’ like the rest of us. Apparently, Mr. Street set up shop earlier this morning and made up his mind to brave the inclement weather in order to be one of the first to snag an iPhone. Currently, he’s waiting patiently along Ranstead St. at 16th St. in Center City to be third in line to purchase an iPhone from the AT&T store, and while we’re sure such an influential character could have just paid someone off to do the waiting for him, the reward will be that much sweeter when 6:01PM rolls around.
Update: Looks like the media descended on the mayor and the dude took off about an hour ago! Looks like someone else has his spot in line (now word on whether he’s waiting for the mayor), but we’ll have an update in our lineblog shortly.

Remaining charges in HP spying case dropped
Friday, June 29th, 2007Filed under: Misc. Gadgets
It looks like the three defendants in the HP spying case can rest easy for the time being, as the judge in the case has now dropped the remaining charges against them, the AP reports. While Superior Court Judge Ray E. Cunningham didn’t find that the individuals’ actions rose to the level of criminal activity, he clearly wasn’t too impressed with them either, calling their conduct a “betrayal of trust and honor.” This latest development is apparently the result of the deal reached in March, in which the three men (one HP exec and two private investigators) each agreed to complete 96 hours of community service. They apparently aren’t entirely off the hook just yet though, as a federal investigation into the matter is still ongoing.

Kuchofuku’s air conditioned bed, clothing line
Friday, June 29th, 2007Filed under: Household, Wearables
Sure, you could blow a cool million on a bed you’d never sleep on, but why not grab one that actually provides some relief (and won’t run you $5k a month… forever) after a hard day in the blazing sun? Enter Kuchofuku, who certainly has the right idea with its air conditioned sleeper and clothing line. The makeshift bed, which only weighs 5.3-pounds, utilizes dual fans to pull air in and circulate it through the cushion beneath you. Of course, it’d be a modern tragedy to have to rise and leave such a pleasant scenario, but you can solve that dilemma as well care of the air conditioned shirt. The button-up garb touts an integrated fan that is purportedly powered via USB, which means that your armpits can now remain fresh regardless of how infrequent the AC kicks on at the office. A cooler night’s sleep is but $399 away, while the new threads (seen after the jump) will run you a staggering $159 apiece.

Call/Recall unveils multi-terabyte optical storage solution
Friday, June 29th, 2007Filed under: Storage
There was a brief moment in time when unveiling an “optical storage technology that can provide 40 times the capacity of Blu-ray and over 200 times the capacity of DVD” would be momentous, but unfortunately for Call/Recall, it’s just one of the herd at this point. Nevertheless, the company is pushing forward in its development of “2-photon 3D technology” that can purportedly stuff many terabytes of data onto a “DVD-sized disc” or even cram 50GB onto a one-inch disc aimed at cellphones and mobile media players. The system relies on a “2-photon recording process to record bits in a three-dimensional volume in a disk,” which can stuff multiple layers atop one another in order to give users more room to work with. As expected, there’s little to be said about an actual mainstream release of the so-called solution, and besides, we’re having a hard enough time swallowing the pricetags of existing high-density storage drives.
