Friday, September 28th, 2007Filed under: Portable Audio
Zoinks, Kenwood just loosed yet another Media Keg design into Japan. Two in fact, each sharing the same guts: the sophisticatedly-smarmy GD55 and whimsically-chintzy GD50. Both feature up to 2GB of flash, a 4-line OLED display, a USB mass storage mode and support for MP3 or DRM’d WMA audio with up to 21 hours of MP3 playback before needing a recharge. Yours in Japan starting next month for ¥15,000 or about $130 for the full 2GB treatment.

Visa rolls out payWave-enabled Micro Tag key fobs
Friday, September 28th, 2007Filed under: Misc. Gadgets, Wireless
In the latest scheme to make it just a little easier for you to part with your money, Visa has begun rolling out its Micro Tag key fobs for contactless (and if under $25, signature-less) payments. The issuer-customizable Tags are based on Visa’s payWave technology — an RFID system similar to MasterCard’s PayPass — and are meant to act as companions to existing credit and debit cards. To commemorate the launch, Visa passed out 1,000 Tags pre-loaded with $15 at yesterday’s San Francisco Giants game at AT&T Park, encouraging fans to purchase the fatty stadium concessions that could perhaps lull them into the false notion that this a completely secure payment method.

Hands-on with iRobot’s new ConnectR and Looj bots
Thursday, September 27th, 2007There’s not much to see and feel with these two — iRobots are all about the action — but we got a quick look at the new ConnectR and Looj today. The Looj seems well enough suited to its purpose, with solid construction and a powerful thwap. We saw it running through a gutter earlier, and it certainly seems like it can clean as advertised. The ConnectR seems less well polished, but that’s to be expected, since iRobot seems to be pretty flexible on what the finished product will be like when it ships in 2008, with changes based on customer feedback from trial sales. One feature in the works is an IR emitter, for controlling home automation and AV products, and hopefully iRobot can clean this one up and add another “killer” feature or two before unleashing it on the public.

Toshiba tosses gigabeat V41 brick at Sony: misses, throws like girl
Thursday, September 27th, 2007Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video
First Sony, now Toshiba introduces a new flash-based 1Seg TV totin’ media player onto the Japanese market. However, unless you’re after SD/SDHC card expansion, Microsoft DRM support, and a larger 3.5-inch display (albeit at the same resolution as the Sony) for the same price but twice the weight, there’s just not much to like from the latest Toshiba slab sporting the gigabeat logo. Impress did the dirty work of pitting the gigabeat V41 head-to-head with the smokin’ Sony NW-A910 for a feature-by-feature comparison. Damn Tosh, we can feel your embarrassment from here.

Zipit reveals Z2 Wireless Messenger for IM addicts
Thursday, September 27th, 2007Filed under: Handhelds, Wireless

It’s been quite some time since we’ve heard from Zipit, but the company is hitting back with a second version of its trendy Wireless Messenger. The Z2 doesn’t deviate too far from the original’s design, but the keyboard left a lot to be desired during our limited playtime. As expected, this handheld unit works on any WiFi network and supports AOL, Yahoo and MSN IM platforms so users can carry on multiple conversations. Furthermore, you’ll find an integrated music player (dubbed MyTunez) that can play back files stored on your miniSD card or tunes streamed from the ‘net, and the MyPhotoz feature lets you view photo slideshows, too. For those interested, it’ll be available next month for $149.99, and if you hadn’t already noticed, a host of hands-on photos are waiting below.

Nokia N95-3 with North American 3G now available
Wednesday, September 26th, 2007Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds
With nary an AT&T agreement in sight, Nokia has gone out on a limb to launch the unlocked N95-3 today, bringing the all the original N95’s goodness back for a second round with a few key changes. Most notably, of course, is the presence of HSDPA on the 850 and 1900MHz bands, but other modifications include a higher-capacity battery, recessed camera lens (sans protective shutter this time around), twice the RAM, and availability in black and “dark sand” (for the rear only — the front’s always silver). Grab it starting today in Nokia’s flagship stores in New York and Chicago for $699.

Qsonix launches Q110 music management system
Wednesday, September 26th, 2007Filed under: Home Entertainment
For those who spend copious amounts of time listening to their music collection — enough to justify a touchscreen-based music management system — the Qsonix Q110 ought to tempt your wallet. The device is available in 250GB, 500GB or 1TB kits and features front access USB / accessory ports, four discrete analog audio outputs for multi-room applications and IR remote control capabilities. Additionally, it comes bundled with the latest (v2.2) software that adds “a fully integrated MusicGiants HD Download Store using Qsonix’s Album Browser drag-and-drop interface,” and just in case you plan on never going there, each system comes with a $50 music store credit to rope you in. Reportedly, the Q110 is available as we speak with prices ranging from a whopping $5,995 to a staggering $7,795. [Warning: PDF read link]

Cath Kidston partners with Roberts on flowery DAB radio
Wednesday, September 26th, 2007Filed under: Misc. Gadgets
You already know what Cath Kidston can do, and it seems the designer is striking back once more by flowering up a Roberts DAB radio. Dubbed the Washed Rose, this retro-inspired device sports a cutesy floral pattern, built-in display, automatic tuning, a carry handle, PausePlus to pause / rewind live programming, and the usual complement of knobs and buttons. Granted, she ain’t cheap at £200 ($402), but that’s the premium you’ll pay for a design such as this, we suppose.

T-Mobile announces Sidekick LX and Sidekick Slide
Wednesday, September 26th, 2007Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds
Capping off months of rumor and speculation, T-Mobile and Danger have announced two new Sidekicks today targeting decidedly different segments of the market. The Sidekick LX takes over as the new king of the Hiptop hill, boasting a Sidekick-first wide QVGA display — touted as incorporating technology borrowed from Sharp’s AQUOS televisions, no less — along with configurable mood lighting, 1.3 megapixel camera with flash, and 128MB worth of bundled microSD memory. Meanwhile, the 4.6 x 2.4 x 0.68-inch Sidekick Slide becomes the first Hiptop device to come from Motorola, the first to ditch the trademark swivel display, and the first to go on a serious diet (anyone who’s used a Sidekick of old knows that it ain’t exactly small) while still packing the same functionality and 1.3 megapixel cam as its big sib. Look for the LX to hit store shelves come October 24 in your choice of “midnight blue” and “espresso brown” for a cool $299 on contract; the Slide slides in (sorry, couldn’t help it) two weeks later on November 7 in a black / deep purple combo for a Franklin less at $199.
