Canon’s been known to leak an upcoming model or five in website descriptions, UPC codes, certification lists, and driver downloads, so pardon us if we’re not too shocked that references to a “Rebel XS / 1000D” have popped up in the latest version of the company’s RAW conversion utility. Of course, there aren’t any specs or pictures, but based on Canon’s naming scheme, we’d hazard that it’ll be a lower-end version of the Rebel XSi, replacing the now somewhat-outdated Rebel XT. Of course, that’s purely conjecture, but based on Canon’s track record with these leaks, we’ll know for sure soon enough.

Modder creates Dreamcast portable from mom’s plastic jewelry box

Dreamcast fans are doing what they can to keep the final Sega console alive in handheld fashion. This latest one certainly isn’t the most elegant mod in the world — in fact, it’s a boxy Frankenstein that looks pretty uncomfortable and crampy after a long game session. That said, the clean, straight lines and generous 5-inch screen are an impressive step up from some rough versions we’ve seen elsewhere. Taking an entire Dreamcast’s guts, adding an LCD screen, forging a portable power supply, and fitting it all in one portable box is no easy task — so we salute you, modders. And we confess, we totally dig the brass hinges. Video after the break.

Superpowerful small wind turbines light up the night

We’ve seem some impressive wind power tech, but a new breed of small, high-power wind turbines could potentially bring efficient wind power home. Developed by an inventor named Doug Selsam, the new turbines have rotors just 14-18 inches in diameter, but can produce 200 watts in a 20MPH wind, and much more than that at higher wind speeds. The trick is using high-strength carbon-fiber materials that allow several rotors to be hooked up as one — in strong winds a thirteen-rotor system can produce enough juice to blow out a bank of car headlights “like flashbulbs.” That’s pretty impressive — especially since the system is light and balanced enough to be held up with one hand. No word on when or how we might see these hit the public, but we can see some pretty sweet applications — laptops in the park, anyone?

MSI Wind gets official pricing and availability for the US: $399

We already knew most of the details on the MSI Wind, but the Atom-based ultraportable just got official US pricing and availability today — and just like we hoped, it got a little cheaper on the trip over. Although there’ll be both 8.9-inch and 10-inch versions worldwide, we’re only getting the 10-inch in both XP and Linux flavors, starting June 3rd. The SuSE version will feature that 1.6GHz Atom, 512MB of RAM, 80GB hard drive, and a 3-cell battery rated at 2.5 hours of use for $399, while the XP edition will come in at $549 with 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth, and a larger 6-cell battery good for 5.5 hours. There’s also apparently going to be a $500 “base” XP edition, but details on that are pretty sparse at the moment. Looks like ASUS had better get that Atom-based Eee 900 out by June as planned if it wants to keep up, eh?

Philadelphia citywide WiFi officially shut down

We knew it was coming, but Philadelphia’s citywide WiFi is now officially being turned off, and Earthlink is planning on pulling down all of its access points. Like basically every other municipal WiFi project, it seems like the cost of keeping the system going outweighed the benefits, and Earthlink couldn’t find a buyer willing to take things over. Current Earthlink customers will get 30 more days of service, until June 12, and then it’s lights bytes out. Here’s hoping Philly coffee shops are ready for an influx of urban warriors.

RINGBO the riding robot is for kids, the song is for everyone

Why is this child so happy? It’s because he’s taking RINGBO the riding robot by the horns! See his glee as he cruises around for an entire hour at a blazing 2MPH? Hey, it only took six hours to charge up. RINGBO is controlled by those horn-like joysticks, and we can only hope that front panel contains an IR receiver — one that might give parents hours of pleasure as they override their kids’ intended direction. RINGBO will be shown by Airrobot at this week’s Koreannovation Trade Show in NYC, so we’ll be sure to bring our offspring, as it’s meant for children aged 2-3 and up to 66lbs. We just want to know two things: how much, and can we cheat the 66lb weight limit? Maybe just a little? C’mon. Want to have your mind totally blown? Please watch the video after the break. Please.

Dell’s 3008WFP is available again, technical issues resolved

For those of you waiting with bated breath for Dell’s gargantuan 3008WFP 30-inch LCD to return from technical-issue-town, your prayers have been answered. The monster display is back on the company’s virtual shelves, presumably with that “small technical issue” wiped out of existence. So go for it people; that larger-than-life game of Crysis won’t wait forever.
